Sydney is a city rich in cultural diversity and there is something for every palate and purse size. Checking in on Foursquare and using the Explore feature is a great way to discover interesting places of interest, however, to give you a running start in Sydney we thought we’d give you a few suggestions for your culinary bucket list:
1. El Loco: 64 Foveaux St, Surry Hills NSW 2010

Established by the infamous Justin Hemmes, this place has character and is vibrant. It’s a dingy pub given a colourful Spanish-style makeover. Bright lights, long shared tables and awesome food and drink combos. El Loco translates as “The Crazy or The Fool” and there are two things pretty crazy about this place: 1. On any night of the week it is busy. Rain, hail, cyclone, tsunami or shine. 2. The tacos are sensational. Small but filling, bursting with flavour and cheap!
Recommended: Beef Taco; Guac, Salsa and Chips and a Jalepeno Margarita! Or keep yourself guessing with the “surprise taco”.
2. El Capo: 51 Waterloo St, Surry Hills 2010

The website really got us intrigued about this joint. This Latin Street Food diner claims to serve up ‘good food for bad people’. This little slogan awoke the inner badass inside (or wanna-be badass) and had us marching into the premises! The decor is loud with bright murals on white walls and the staff are super cool.
Recommended: Curiosity got the best of us and we ordered the $10 lunch special of Grits, Port and Salad which is juicy pork, puffed white corn and cabbage salad. It was tops!
3. The Abercrombie: 100 Broadway, Sydney 2008

In 2010 this big old, well-worn establishment packed it up and shut the doors. It was a sad day for the loyal patrons who drank and danced many nights away inside. To the delight of these unfaltering fans the doors have reopened and revealed a very funky makeover. Draped in tartan and with possibly the whackiest menu in Sydney, the Abercrombie is the newest in a growing group of Sydney pub revamps and it doesn’t leave you wanting. Huddled in a booth we were transported to a diner in Harlem and we liked it there a whole lot, y’all gotta try it!
Recommended: BBQ pork burger with asian slaw, coriander and mayo served with crinkle cut chips on the side. Wash it down with a “MacGyver” cocktail which is a scotch-based fruity drink, topped with Passion-Pop…yeah they went there! Passion Pop is unashamedly listed on the menu. What? Are you too cool to acknowledge your 16-year-old self and the days of $4 sparkling wine?!
4. Danks Street Depot - Sydney International Airport Departures
Inspiring chef Jared Ingersoll is undoubtedly the king of the Sydney Street food scene. His passion for a biodynamic, locally sourced and sustainable produce like fresh eggs and poultry raised with 100 kms from the cafe also give his cuisine a natural leading edge in the flavor department. Located before customs and security check-points, his menu is a combination of his gourmet aces including the organic chicken sandwich and his tribute to the New York Reuben Corned Beef sandwich. Also touting all day breakfast, his Cornucopia Farms eggs in the Goat Cheese and Basil Omelette and an Absolut Bloody Mary will send you home with a smile.

A serious case of it.
The Rugby World Cup is just around the corner and after the Wallabies redeemed themselves with a convincing win over South Africa’s Springboks over the weekend we’re feeling confident (Hush now! These B-team utterances about the ‘Boks need not be brought up here!).
It’s not long before we’ll be donning the green and gold jerseys and heading to Sydney International Airport with a ticket to New Zealand in hand and when we get there we’ll be stopping off at the Danks Street Depot cafe (which is just before security at T1) to let it be known to Jared Ingersoll that Australia is the greatest rugby playing nation on earth…contrary to what he claims in this little video!!

Egg-ceptional Travel…
Ok, I’m putting it out there…I think dinner and lunch are overrated. In my personal opinion breakfast is, hands down, the greatest meal of the day. Those people that claim they never eat breakfast or they aren’t hungry in the mornings furrow my brow. These poor misguided people really don’t know what they are missing out on. Breakfast truly is where it is at. What other meal allows you to start with a sweet buttery goodness of a croissant or flaky Danish, then progress to warm slow food and finish with fruit and not be given the guilty look that accompanies dessert indulgence.
You might think this a big call and perhaps it is an outlandish statement but I’m confident making this claim because Jared Ingersoll, sustainable foodie extraordinare of Danks Street Depot is with me. He’s so crazy about breakfast that he has put it on the menu all day long.
All. Day. Breakfast. These three words together make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
So for all those folks who don’t get around to eating until lunch time you are in luck, you can get the greatest eggs going at lunch. For those who get cravings for eggs at dinner-time, don’t feel awkward or embarrassed about it, Jared knows where you are coming from and had got you covered.

Sydney International Airport has a great “yellow jacket” brigade of helpful folks. If you are in need of a specific amenity like free public showers, taxi queues, where to get visa photographs, etc. this cheerful crew are certainly “in the know” and very friendly.
