App, App and Away.

Forget travel brochures and clunky guide books. When you are planning a trip interstate or overseas your best resource is on your tablet or smart phone. There is an abundance of travel apps available to play with and to organise your journey with but sifting through the multitudes can be a daunting task. We’ve tried and tested some of the newest ones to hit the digital world and we recommend you check these out when dreaming up your next travel adventure.

World Customs & Cultures - iPhone and iPad App, Free. There is nothing more insulting to the locals than a loud-mouthed, ignorant tourist. Your vacation can be made all the more interesting and insightful if you can connect with the locals. The best way to do this is to get an understanding of their way of life using this app which covers over 165 countries.

For each country there is both important and meaningful information:

- Greetings
- Communication Style
- Personal Space & Touching
- Eye Contact
- Views of Time
- Gender Issues
- Gestures
- Taboos
- Law & Order

This app will help you avoid trouble abroad and allow you to build great new connections with locals which is really what traveling is all about.

Flight Track - iPhone and iPad App, $4.99. Avoid frustration of turning up to the airport only to discover that your flight has been cancelled with this application that we feel is well worth the price. It is linked with more than 5000 airports and 1400 airlines so weather you’re flying international or domestic,  it is highly useful.

The real time updates keep you in the loop with gate changes, delays and cancellations. You can view the exact location of an aircraft during flight get live updates on it’s progress to the destination. This is a particularly handy feature if you have to pick a loved one up from the airport.

Keep track of all your connecting flights and keep notes of any important details with the note feature. Along with your passport this app is a an absolute travel essential.

SSP Switzerland have also entered the app market with the roll our of the TravelWise application. Similar to analogue program in mechanics, TravelWise gives travel employees in airports and railway stations the ability to collect points and receive discounts when purchasing at participating cafes, convenience stores and restaurants in Geneva and Zurich airports including Caffe Ritazza, Montreux Jazz Cafe and iconic Altitude restaurants.

The long walk ahead.  (Taken with Instagram at Gate 57)

Look who’s talking at Sydney International Airport! Watch to the end and scan the QR code our exclusive digital friends offer at the Montreux Jazz Cafe.

Vodka is the spirit of the month at Sydney International Airport. When it looks as good as this who can blame us? Cocktails anyone?? It’s after midday somewhere!

WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT ON YOUR PLANET?

We’re fortunate to travel often. Perhaps the most exotic place would be The North Pole.

A Montreux Martini?

My, my it’s Martini-time! In the spirit of our two-for-one happy hour at Montreux Jazz Cafe at Sydney International Airport we thought we’d share our recipe and a complete how to video on making the perfect Espresso Martini! It’s the drink you always order when out and about and can now make at home with ease. Cheers to that!

Espresso Martini

Ingredients

1. I freshly brewed espresso coffee

2. 45mL Absolut Vodka

3. 45mL Kahlua liquor

4. 1 tablespoon of sugar syrup

Method

Chill a martini glass with ice. Put aside. Over a filled Boston shaker of ice, add coffee, vodka, Kahlua and sugar syrup. Shake vigorously. Prepare the martini glass and strain mixture into the glass. Garnish with three coffee beans and enjoy!

Montreux Jazz Cafe is located in front of Gate C (Qantas First Class Check In Area), before customs and security. The Cafe first up it’s espresso machine every morning from 6AM and serves until late. Added benefit the lovely cocktails is the Montreux Jazz Cafe music. sourced from exclusive footage from the legendary Swiss music festival.

Hot or Cold - Libations for the liberated!

I make sure that I select soothing and healthy options before I fly.

My top picks at the airport are:

  • Bowls of hot chocolate and you can add marshmallows for an even creamier texture. Hot chocolate is the universal winter drink, whether you are flying to or from the winter season, a big portion of hot chocolate will soothe and relax you.
  • Fresh fruit juices: apple, carrot and orange juice is my go-to combination.  Choose which fresh fruits you like the most and top up on your nutrients before the flight.
  • Coffee: I’m susceptible to an espresso to give me a quick energy boost and I love having so many coffee choices at airports. Whether you prefer your coffee with more milk or prefer it black, coffee is universally considered the drink you have while you are waiting.

To beat the summer heat head to Caffe Ritazza for one of their notable mock-tails which are incredible dessert non-alcoholic drinks. I like the summer fruits Mojito - fruit puree, mint and lime juice. Another delicious sounding mock-tail and on my ‘must taste’ list is the Tropical Sunrise, a combination of mango and apple fruit smoothie, grenadine syrup and lime juice.

Besides the double chocolate (how good does that sound?) and Cafe Latte frappes, Caffe Ritazza also offer raspberry and banoffee milk crushes and the ever popular mango lassi with a few unique drinks you can’t get anywhere else like the banofee (banana and toffee) milk crush.

I always enjoy a glass of red from Italy, France or the Spanish border. I once read that these regions produce wine that is healthier. Red wine is perfect for any season and it’s a great drink choice when you’re celebrating a job promotion, time off work or that dream trip you’ve saved up for.

What better way to leave an airport, full of antioxidants and nutrients with a boost of energy by having a hot or cold beverage in preparation for a flight.

What kind of beverage do you make a bee line for at the airport?

Running to Gate 32

“Attention please, would Ms J Smith please report to gate 32 immediately as your Air New Zealand flight, ANZ87, has completed boarding and is about to depart.”

The announcement has your heart racing and your mind cursing the cheap wheelie carry-on bag you bought in Hong Kong because all of a sudden, when you need them most, the wheels don’t work. Praying you are heading in the right direction towards gate 32 you rue the choice of heels for a long haul flight. All you can do is plead with the gods of flight: “Wait, please don’t leave without me.”

These scenarios never have a happy ending, do they? You arrive to gate 32 with just enough time to see the aircrew heading down the tunnel while you remain helpless on the wrong side of the glass doors. You slowly resign yourself to the sad fate of having to spend the night in an airport hotel and live off greasy, luke-warm and ridiculously expensive room service for the next 24 hours. Well buck up traveller because we have some good news for you. Forget the room service, in Sydney International Airport we have a seriously good selection of quality dining opportunities that will make the wait for your next flight much more pleasant

Take the edge off missing the flight with some lunch at Caviar House. Indulge in their  melt-in-the-mouth salmon gravlax.

Stoll over to Trattoria Prego to recharge your laptop battery with their power outlets, use their  free wifi and grab some of Nonna’s Italian meatballs for dinner.

Head back to the hotel but don’t order room service as we have breakfast covered here at Danks Street Depot. Try the best eggs Sydney has to offer and get the poached eggs with silverbeet hash.

We keep food fresh at Sydney International Airport so you fly fresh.

One word every traveler hates…Delayed. (Qantas Strike)

Nothing makes a air traveler more frustrated than the word “Delayed” which will be resounding at Sydney Airports on Friday with the announcement that Qantas Airways engineers will strike on Friday, May 13.

Check with your airline if you are arriving or departing between 8am and 9 am as that is when the strike is to be expected. Pilots and engineers in airports across Australia want an increase in their wages.

Over the past week there have been threats of strike and negotiations. The Qantas Group Executive of Operations, Lyell Strambi has announced that Qantas passengers could continue to travel with confidence with only minor delays expected on Friday morning.

Read all about the strikes and the lead up to the strikes over here

Because airlines and airports have a responsibility towards their passengers; if your home-bound flight is delayed because of a strike, the airline has a strict duty of care towards you: it must provide meals and accommodation as necessary until it can bring you home. If, however, you decide to find some other way home - for example because of work or family commitments - then the airline’s only liability to you is to refund your fare.

So be assured that throughout this week Qantas has been preparing for the impacts of this strike and is ensuring that the passengers are not inconvenienced in any way.

SSP, the largest caterer at Sydney International Airport, said this morning “Travelers take heart”.  Montreux Jazz Cafe located directly in front of Qantas First Class check-in counter offers consolation with free-wifi and places to recharge mobile phones and computers, a Breakfast Buffet, comfortable seating and a commitment to making any delays more pleasant.

Let us entertain you. - Montreux Jazz Cafe

It’s big screens show jazz and popular recording artists like Phil Collins, NERD, and Simply Red filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland archived over the past 45 years.

Keep checking the flight information  online or if you have a smart phone, purchase the Sydney Flight Tracker App and keep checking while you are traveling.

For those of you who are arriving in Sydney airport internationally on Friday, welcome to Sydney!
